Historic Beverly WV

If you’d like to get a taste of some small town civil war history, take a trip north of Snowshoe to Beverly, WV.

Located approximately 45 minutes north on route 219, Beverly is a quaint little town that dates back to the late 1700’s.  The town features several historic sites.

The most popular is the Rich Mountain Battlefield, home to one of the earliest civil war battles. To this date, there remains nearly a dozen intact pre cival war buildings.  Several operate as museums or shops that are open to the public.

Scenic Vintage Train Rides

Scenic train rides on a vintage locomotive are very popular attractions for visitors and guests to the Snowshoe area.  Trains depart from various stations in Pocahontas and Randolph counties.

The nearest station to Snowshoe is the Cass Depot located about 25 minutes from Snowshoe via route 66.  Cass, WV was a company town formed in 1901 by the  West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company.  The site features a small restaurant and gift shop at the station

The Durbin Depot, featuring the Durbin Rocket, is located approximately 45 minutes from Snowshoe via routes 66, 92 and 250.  There is a small gift shop, the Rail and Trail Store, which is across the street from the Depot.

If one is looking for a historic town experience, one could travel north to the Elkins station in downtown Elkins, WV.  Along with the train station, there are many shops and restaurants within walking distance.

Trout Fishing

Elk Springs Resort is tucked away on the banks of The Elk River near the Randolph, Pocahontas County lines in West Virginia. If you want to get away from it all, this is the place to come to. No cell service and limited wifi, but only if you’re lucky.
